Katherine Heigl back at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

It has been a real-life cliffhanger bigger than the one faced by her character Izzie in the season finale of “Grey’s Anatomy”: Will series co-star Katherine Heigl return to “Grey’s” next season?

Now sources say that Heigl’s option on the medical drama has been picked up, meaning the actress will continue on the series.

The news comes on the heels of word leaking that Heigl’s pal on the show, T.R. Knight, won’t return next season.

ABC won’t confirm any casting for its flagship drama series.

The lives of both actors’ characters were left hanging in the balance in the “Grey’s” season finale last month.

Izzie, who had been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer in the brain and liver, underwent a successful brain surgery but lost her short-term memory and suddenly flat-lined in the final minutes of the finale.

Heigl has had a somewhat rocky tenure on “Grey’s.”

The series made her a household name, launched her successful movie career and earned her an Emmy in 2007. But tensions began to creep in, escalating last summer when Heigl pulled herself out of Emmy consideration, attributing her decision to the lack of good stories for her character.

She also was rumored to have lobbied for a release from the show to focus on her booming feature career.

But that was a year ago. This past season, the storyline of Izzie’s cancer was central to the show’s creative resurgence. Additionally, the actress had stated publicly that she wanted to continue on the show.

EW.com Exclusive: T.R. Knight To Officially Exit Greys Anatomy‏

Fall’s still months away, but one of last season’s bigger Grey’s Anatomy cliffhangers has already been resolved: Sources confirm to Entertainment Weekly’s Ausiello Files exclusively that ABC has granted T.R. Knight’s wish to be released from his contract. The official decision came down in the past few days, just as many of his castmates began receiving their formal pickup letters from the network.

The actor’s exit closes yet another rocky chapter for the embattled primetime soap, one that opened with Isaiahgate and worsened when, amid rumors that Knight was clashing with series creator Shonda Rhimes, George O’Malley was backburnered. Finally, Knight grew so fed up with his character’s lack of storyline that he asked if he could check out three years before his deal expired. After that, all indications were that he would be let go, although Rhimes didn’t make a final decision until recently. (Contractually speaking, she had until June 30 to make up her mind.)

Last month, Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly’s EW.com that George’s relatively light storyline this year was the result of the normal “ebbs and flows” of ensemble television. But she did acknowledge that he was intentionally written lighter during the last half of the season so that viewers wouldn’t think it odd that he was absent from the season finale — something that was necessary to preserve the episode’s biggest twist: that George was actually a disfigured John Doe who had been hit by a bus. “I really wanted you to not notice that he wasn’t there for most of this episode,” she said. “I don’t think anybody noticed because of the way we laid it out this season.”

Knight’s departure would seem to confirm that George doesn’t survive, although fans have wondered whether Rhimes is planning to pull an Elizabeth Reaser (Jane Doe/Rebecca) and have him live, only to be replaced by another actor, thanks to plastic surgeon Sloane’s handiwork. That’s “hilarious, ridiculous,” the boss has said. However, I’ve heard that she was interested in having Knight appear in next season’s first three episodes, but a short-term deal could not be brokered.

What will Knight do now? Per an insider, the theatrically-trained thesp is in talks to start 2010 by headlining a Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor, the classic farce he recently did a reading of with Alfred Molina, Tony Shalhoub and Marian Seldes.

Grey’s Costar to T.R. Knight: Please Don’t Go!

Justin Chambers doesn’t want T.R. Knight to hang up his scrubs just yet.

“T.R. is an amazing actor and I want him to be there as long as I’m on there,” Chambers, who plays Dr. Alex Karev on Grey’s Anatomy, told us the other night at the Salvatore Ferragamo benefit for L’Aquila Earthquake victims. “He’s wonderful to work with.”

Besides, Knight’s character, Dr. George O’Malley, has so much growing to do…

“That’s one great thing about the show,” Chambers said. “All the characters have so much to explore. The audience followed these young interns coming into this hospital and now they’re residents, but they have more to learn as far as surgery, social skills and manners.”

Former Grey’s star Melissa George says she’s not convinced that Knight is definitely leaving. No matter what happens, she said, “He will go on to bigger and better things.”
